A High-Value Raw Material That Is Not Easy to Control
Cardanol is one of the most important derivatives of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL), widely used in the production of coatings, adhesives, and industrial materials. However, in actual manufacturing, quality control – especially color stability – remains a major challenge.
Many Cardanol products tend to undergo color changes over time after production, directly affecting product quality and suitability for applications in industries with high technical standards.
Color Changes and Yield Loss During Production
Traditional distillation processes using CNSL often face several limitations:
- Low recovery yield, typically around 50–60%, due to polymerization during thermal processing
- Color changes from light yellow to brown during storage
- Negative effects on the quality of downstream products such as phenalkamine
- The main causes are the presence of cardol and other impurities in the mixture
These issues make it difficult for businesses to ensure product stability and consistency.
A Color-Stable Cardanol Production Process
To overcome these limitations, an improved process has been developed to produce Cardanol with greater color stability and more consistent quality.
The process includes the following main steps:
- CNSL Distillation (Short-Path Distillation)
Crude cashew nut shell liquid is distilled to obtain crude Cardanol while removing unwanted low-boiling components. - Chemical Treatment with Boric Acid
The crude Cardanol is reacted with boric acid to stabilize its structure and reduce reactions that may cause color changes. - Second Distillation and Purification
The reacted mixture is then distilled again to collect the main fraction. Depending on the required specification, an additional treatment step using adsorbents or reducing agents may be applied to further improve purity and color stability.
As a result, the final Cardanol/Cardol mixture offers:
- Higher color stability during storage
- Better suitability for phenalkamine production
- Improved safety and compatibility in handling and transportation
